LESSER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS ON LEK The mating dance of grouse is wonderful to watch and exciting to capture on film. Selman Ranch in Northwestern Oklahoma is great for lodging and blind sitting. ON: March 30-April 1, 2005 with the 2nd a weather day if needed. COST: $1000 will include all costs from Oklahoma City. I'll pick you up at the airport on the 4th and we'll drive the three hours to the ranch. Includes all meals, time in the blind, access to private property and lodging at the ranch. OBJECTIVES: Photo tour for Lesser prairie-chickens, We will shoot the mating dance of the threatened Lesser Prairie-Chicken and the rest of the day will be spent photographing Oklahoma stuff. There are oil wells, grasslands, salt flats, cool scenery, thunder storms and other birds too (ring-necked pheasants, bobwhite, snowy plovers, migrating sandpipers and chukar). We will get three full morning sessions with the chickens. WORKSHOP: Up well before sunrise and position in the blind. Shoot the chickens from sunup until about 10am. They then leave the lek and so do we. Great meals are to be had at the ranch, home cooking anyone? The afternoon will be spent exploring and shooting the other opportunities. One day I hope to visit the rancher who is using decoys and recordings to bring the chickens back on his land. This will be a great opportunity to tell the whole story and how the locals are helping the birds and biologists. One day we will work the ranch and shoot the wonderful scenery, oil wells, long horn cattle and riparian zones. The third day we will leave open with many options including visiting a nearby wildlife refuge or national grassland area. LODGING: The Selman Ranch is a historic homestead site that is huge. The facilities are rustic, but the food is awesome! Home cooked meals by the ranch owner Sue Selman. We will have the run of the place and will feel quite comfortable there. |
